Why .cf isn't a workable choice right now
The .cf domain is administered by the Société Centrafricaine de Télécommunications (SOCATEL), and for years it operated through a partnership with Freenom that gave away most .cf domains for free worldwide, with no requirement to have any connection to the Central African Republic. Following Freenom's 2024 legal settlement with Meta, Freenom announced it was exiting the domain business entirely, and the Central African government took direct ownership of the .cf registry, closing off further registrations while the transition is sorted out. As of this writing, new .cf domain registrations and transfers are not being processed, so a business searching for domain hosting Central African Republic options built around a .cf address is planning around a registration that currently isn't available.
This makes .com, or another open gTLD, the only realistic option for a Central African business registering a new domain today, regardless of any preference for a locally branded address. A business that already holds a .cf domain from before the registry closure should treat it as a legacy asset to maintain rather than something to actively expand, since renewal and support options for existing .cf holders have become less predictable since the ownership change.
